World Teachers’ Day: Oyo NUJ Salutes Teachers, Demands Better Welfare, Working Conditions

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has commended teachers across the state and Nigeria for their sacrifices and dedication to shaping the future of society, while calling for urgent measures to improve their welfare and working conditions.

The council made the commendation in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Akeem Abas, and Secretary, Temidayo Adu, to mark the 2026 World Teachers’ Day on Monday.

The NUJ described teachers as critical pillars of national development, stressing that no country could achieve sustainable development without motivated, well-trained and professionally respected teachers.

However, while celebrating their contributions, the council expressed concern over challenges confronting the profession, including inadequate remuneration, poor working conditions, insufficient teaching facilities, excessive workload and limited opportunities for professional development.

It called on the Federal and state governments to move beyond rhetoric and implement policies that guarantee decent welfare, conducive working environments and continuous capacity development for teachers.

The council also urged governments to involve teachers more meaningfully in the formulation and implementation of education policies, noting that those responsible for delivering education should be treated as strategic partners in transforming the sector.

It called for greater investment in modern classrooms, teaching aids, digital infrastructure and other facilities required to enable teachers to discharge their responsibilities effectively.

The NUJ commended Oyo teachers for remaining committed to their duties despite prevailing economic challenges, urging them to continue upholding professionalism, integrity, discipline and dedication to the profession.

It also encouraged teachers to embrace emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and digital learning tools, while preserving the ethical standards and human values central to effective education.

The council called on parents, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to support teachers and protect the dignity of the teaching profession.

It stressed that investing in teachers was an investment in the future of the country, warning that neglecting their welfare and professional advancement could have lasting consequences for generations to come.

The NUJ congratulated teachers across Oyo State and Nigeria on the occasion, reaffirming its commitment to advocating for a stronger education system and improved conditions for those entrusted with educating the nation’s children.
