MMAC Records ₦6.2bn Daily Collection As Mundi Assumes Leadership

The Murtala Muhammed Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reported significant revenue gains and anti-smuggling successes as Deputy Comptroller MD Mundi assumed duty as its new Acting Customs Area Controller.

Mundi took over from Acting Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs GA Otunla during a handover ceremony held at the Command’s Conference Room on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

The transition comes as the Command sustains its revenue drive, with Otunla disclosing that it generated ₦175.68 billion between January and October 2026.

He further revealed that the Command achieved a record daily collection of ₦6.2 billion on October 8, surpassing its daily target of ₦1.16 billion by approximately 433 per cent.

Otunla attributed the performance to enhanced revenue monitoring and measures introduced to close revenue loopholes. Other contributing factors, he said, included cargo scanning, detailed cargo examinations and intelligence-driven risk management.

The outgoing controller also highlighted the Command’s enforcement record, disclosing the seizure of approximately 178 packages of Tramadol and 50 cartons of Canadian Loud, with a combined Duty Paid Value of ₦118.23 million.

The intercepted substances were subsequently transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), underscoring inter-agency cooperation in tackling illicit drug trafficking.

Reflecting on his tenure, Otunla credited the Command’s achievements to the dedication of its personnel, cooperation from sister security agencies and support from stakeholders.

He also acknowledged the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for the confidence placed in him during his service at the Command.

Otunla’s departure follows his elevation to the rank of Acting Assistant Comptroller-General and redeployment to Human Resources Development.

He congratulated Mundi on his appointment and urged Customs personnel to give the incoming controller the necessary support to maintain operational stability and build on the Command’s achievements.

Mundi Outlines Priorities

In his first address as Acting Customs Area Controller, Mundi expressed appreciation to the Comptroller-General and the management of the NCS for the opportunity to lead the Command.

He pledged to strengthen the existing revenue framework, intensify efforts to prevent revenue leakages and ensure strict compliance with Customs laws and regulations.

The new controller also identified the fight against smuggling as a major priority, promising to deepen collaboration with relevant security agencies to improve enforcement operations.

On trade facilitation, Mundi said his administration would pursue more efficient cargo clearance and work towards reducing unnecessary delays while maintaining the standards required for effective Customs control.

He emphasised the importance of maintaining constructive relationships with importers, exporters, licensed Customs agents, airlines, cargo terminal operators and other stakeholders, describing their cooperation as essential to achieving the Command’s objectives.

Mundi equally called on officers and men to uphold discipline, integrity, professionalism and accountability in the discharge of their duties.

He stressed that effective teamwork and respect for the chain of command would guide his administration, while assuring stakeholders that his leadership would be anchored on fairness, firmness, transparency and results.

The new controller’s assumption of duty places renewed emphasis on sustaining revenue growth, strengthening anti-smuggling operations and improving trade facilitation at the strategic Command.
