BACCIMA: $2.5bn Badagry Deep-Seaport Set To Redefine Nigeria’s Maritime Economy

The Badagry Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (BACCIMA) has declared that the proposed $2.5 billion Badagry Deep-Seaport will decisively solidify the region’s status as a premier maritime, logistics, industrial, and commercial gateway for West Africa.

The President of BACCIMA, Alhaji Idris Yahaya, made this assertion during a media parley with newsmen in Lagos.

His remarks come on the heels of a milestone Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on September 9 between APM Terminals and Badagry Port Development Ltd. to kickstart the multi-billion-dollar project. The high-profile signing took place during a Federal Government investment delegation to Denmark, led by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, aimed at securing foreign direct investment for Nigeria’s port infrastructure. The development was officially confirmed in a statement issued by the minister’s Special Adviser, Dr Bolaji Akinola.

Strategic Corridor and Economic Windfall

The Federal Executive Council had previously approved the concession of the deep seaport under a Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) Public-Private Partnership model. Regulated by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), the deep seaport is projected to inject over $53 billion into the national economy over its 45-year concession timeline.

Alhaji Yahaya emphasised that Badagry’s unique geographical positioning along the Lagos-Abidjan international trade corridor, coupled with its immediate proximity to the Republic of Benin, positions it perfectly to capture the broader Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) market.

“This landmark development will trigger a massive economic chain reaction,” Yahaya stated. 

“We anticipate unprecedented growth across key sectors including logistics, warehousing, manufacturing, agro-processing, haulage, maritime services, real estate, and hospitality, thereby unlocking infinite milestones for local and international businesses.”

A Triumphant Milestone for Advocacy

Describing the MoU as a massive victory for the business community, Yahaya noted that BACCIMA had long championed the cause.

“This brings immense joy to the Chamber. We have continuously engaged government actors at all levels, maintaining active channels with the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, as well as the Lagos State Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mrs Folashade Ambrose-Medebem,” Yahaya explained.

“The Minister personally confirmed to me that the Federal Government has granted full regulatory backing. The ball is now firmly in the court of the primary promoters to accelerate their collaborative efforts and translate this blueprint into reality.”

Yahaya commended the presence of key stakeholders at the Denmark signing, notably Minister Oyetola and the Managing Director of Badagry Port Development Ltd., Chief Didi Ndiomu, describing their participation as a testament to the political will backing the project.

Job Creation and Independent Power Solutions

Looking ahead to the operational phase, the BACCIMA boss highlighted the immense socio-economic transformation awaiting host communities.

“The social benefits are infinite. Beyond generating critical employment for engineers, technical artisans, and our vibrant youth demographic, the project will naturally stimulate Badagry’s population growth and urban development.”

Addressing infrastructural dependencies, Yahaya hinted at a looming energy revolution in the axis, catalysed by the recent liberalisation of Nigeria’s electricity sector.

“To sustain a modern seaport and the industrial ecosystem surrounding it, uninterrupted power is non-negotiable. With the current legal framework allowing independent power generation, we expect private energy firms to step in and construct dedicated power plants in Badagry, mirroring successful independent power models seen in parts of Lagos Island,” he concluded.

Urging all parties to fast-track remaining administrative procedures, the BACCIMA President expressed absolute optimism that the timely delivery of the Badagry Deep-Seaport will permanently redefine Nigeria’s maritime landscape and drive industrial prosperity for generations.
