NUJ @60: Onigbeti Charges Oyo Journalists To Uphold Professional Ethics

By Victoria Isaac

The Onigbeti of Igbeti, Oba (Engr.) Bashir Olalekan Abioye Siyanbola IV, has called on journalists in Oyo State to remain faithful to the ethical standards of their profession as the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, marks its 60th anniversary.

The monarch, in a congratulatory message to the union’s leadership and members, described the milestone as a defining moment in the history of journalism in the state and acknowledged the contributions of practitioners to public enlightenment.

He commended journalists for keeping the public abreast of developments at the local, national and international levels, noting that their work remained central to informing, educating and entertaining society.

Oba Siyanbola also observed that the media had continued to perform these responsibilities within the ethical and legal framework governing the profession, urging practitioners not to relent in upholding those standards.

The traditional ruler further highlighted Oyo State’s place in the history of the union, noting that it was reportedly the first state in the Southwest to establish the NUJ and the second in Nigeria after the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

In the message, which he personally signed and made available to newsmen on October 31, 2026, the monarch urged journalists to remain committed to the cardinal principles of journalism and sustain the values that define the profession.

He wished the NUJ, Oyo State Council, continued progress and greater accomplishments, while praying for good health and prosperity for its executives and members.

Oba Siyanbola also expressed the hope that members would live to witness and celebrate many more anniversaries of the union.
