Nollywood Mourns: Legendary Actor Olu Jacobs Passes Away At 84

The curtain has fallen on an extraordinary era in African cinema. Oludotun Jacobs, the towering veteran actor and film executive universally revered as Olu Jacobs, has passed away at the age of 84.

His son, Olusoji Jacobs, confirmed the bittersweet news in an emotional Instagram post on Wednesday on behalf of the family.

“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo. We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time.”

Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs leaves behind a monumental legacy that fundamentally shaped modern Nigerian entertainment. A rare master of his craft, he polished his skills at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. Before anchoring the golden age of Nollywood, he broke barriers internationally, starring in numerous British television and theatre productions.

Over a career spanning several decades, Jacobs commanded the screen in more than 100 films. His commanding stage presence and distinct, resonant voice earned him widespread acclaim, including the Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007. In 2011, the Federal Government honoured his immense cultural impact with the national title of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

Alongside his wife and fellow industry matriarch, Joke Silva, he co-founded the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, cementing a lasting institutional legacy for generations of future artists. The passing of the “Lion of Lufodo” marks the definitive end of an iconic chapter in African arts and culture.
