Oyo NUJ Warns Against Unauthorised Use Of Press Centre, Recognises LVJ As Sole Veterans’ Group

By Victoria Isaac

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has clarified that it neither received an application for the use of its Press Centre in Iyaganku, Ibadan, nor approved a proposed lecture scheduled for October 26 by an association claiming to represent veteran journalists.

The council disclosed this in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Akeem Abas, and Secretary, Temidayo Adu, explaining that it was unaware of the planned programme.

The clarification followed a statement by former NUJ President, Prince Lanre Ogundipe, who urged the council to verify the status of groups claiming to represent veteran journalists and establish whether the proposed event had been authorised.

The council identified the League of Veteran Journalists (LVJ) as the only recognised association of veteran journalists in Oyo State, maintaining that it would not recognise any splinter or factional group as a parallel body.

It further stated that no group had formally applied to use the Press Centre for the proposed lecture, stressing that associations seeking to use the facility must comply with established procedures and obtain the council’s approval before announcing events at the venue.

According to the council, its position is aimed at preserving unity within the journalism profession and preventing confusion over the representation of veteran journalists in the state.

While acknowledging Ogundipe’s concerns, the council reaffirmed its respect for veteran journalists and established associations, emphasising the need to protect the integrity of recognised professional bodies.

It also urged members of the journalism community to seek clarification from the appropriate authorities on matters concerning the use of NUJ facilities.
