Indonesia, Malaysia Plans New Maritime Trade Route

Indonesia and Malaysia are considering launching a new maritime route between Belawan and Johor to improve cargo movement and deepen economic ties.

BERNAMA, a TV BRICS partner, reported that the proposed sea link would be used to transport industrial and consumer goods, as well as bulk cargo between the two countries.

It said discussions were underway with shipping operators, cargo owners and logistics companies to determine the most commercially viable routes and develop an appropriate transportation arrangement.

Belawan Port, in North Sumatra, is a major gateway for Indonesia’s maritime trade and serves the northern part of the island.

Under the proposed arrangement, cargo transported through Johor could gain access to the Malaysian market and subsequently be moved through existing maritime networks to other Asian destinations.

The initiative is expected to improve maritime connectivity, facilitate trade and create new opportunities for logistics operators in both countries.

Indonesia and Malaysia share close economic and geographical ties, with maritime transport serving as a key channel for bilateral commerce.
