Iran, Oman Talks On Strait Of Hormuz Shipping Rules Progress

Negotiations between Iran and Oman on new shipping rules for the Strait of Hormuz are progressing, with an interim corridor for safe navigation expected to be announced soon.

Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi disclosed this on X on Wednesday following talks with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi.

“I am hopeful we will soon announce a temporary corridor for the Strait of Hormuz and practical arrangements to restore safe navigation,” al-Busaidi said.

Iran’s state broadcaster, IRIB, also published a joint statement by the two countries, saying they had discussed a phased approach to new shipping rules and mine-clearing operations in the strategic waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz, which borders Iran and Oman, is a major route for global energy supplies.

The two countries have been negotiating the issue for several weeks.

Iran largely closed the strait to shipping after U.S. Israeli strikes began in late February and has demanded that vessels transiting the waterway use a route along its coastline.

The United States, meanwhile, imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports.

Under a framework agreement reached between Iran and the United States in mid-June, Iran and Oman are expected to negotiate a long-term arrangement on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The arrangement is expected to comply with international law and involve neighbouring states.
