The Lagos Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has entered a new phase of leadership as Deputy Comptroller Olufemi Kukoyi assumes the role of Acting Controller following the retirement of Comptroller Hawah Abubakar after 35 years of service.

The transition took place on Wednesday in Lagos during a valedictory and handover ceremony where Abubakar disclosed that the command generated ₦557 billion in revenue between January and August 2026.

Kukoyi, in his first statement after assuming the command, outlined revenue generation, trade facilitation and stronger enforcement as key priorities of his administration.

He pledged to strengthen border security through effective enforcement and discipline, while pursuing technology-driven processes designed to make Customs procedures more transparent and time-bound.

The new acting controller also committed the command to supporting the National Single Window and One-Stop Shop initiatives, while maintaining zero tolerance for compromise in the discharge of its responsibilities.

Kukoyi commended Abubakar for what he described as a solid foundation in revenue generation, trade facilitation and stakeholder management, and wished her a peaceful retirement.

Abubakar, who formally handed over the command, attributed the revenue performance and other achievements recorded during her tenure to teamwork, discipline and professionalism among officers and men.

She said the command also placed emphasis on personnel welfare and strengthened cooperation with stakeholders and sister agencies during her tenure.

The retiring controller expressed appreciation to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Dr Bashir Adeniyi, and the management of the service for the opportunity to lead the command.

She also acknowledged the support received from the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Police, Immigration and other security and regulatory agencies.

Abubakar extended her appreciation to clearing agents, freight forwarders, Lekki Port management and traditional rulers in Lekki, Akodo and Epe, urging them to give Kukoyi the same cooperation and support.

Officers who spoke at the ceremony welcomed Kukoyi’s assumption of office and pledged their cooperation towards the effective administration and service delivery of the command.

The welcome address was delivered by the Deputy Comptroller in charge of Administration, Hauwa Ahmed.
