OPay Debunks Viral Shutdown Report

OPay has assured Nigerians, including customers and merchants, that it remains fully operational, dismissing reports that the fintech company is shutting down.

Dotun Adekunle, OPay’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer, gave the assurance at a news conference on Wednesday in Lagos.

The false information started spreading on social media, with posts claiming that OPay planned to temporarily suspend operations and halt transaction services.

The reports subsequently gained traction across social media platforms, generating concerns among customers, merchants and other users of the OPay platform.

Adekunle dismissed the reports, saying that OPay remained fully operational and had no plans to stop its services in Nigeria.

He assured that OPay would keep processing transactions, maintain reliable service availability, and continue to support customers and merchants effectively.

According to him, OPay has no reason to leave Nigeria, suspend transactions or discontinue its services.

“We are here to stay. We are okay, and we will always do more than banking every day,” Adekunle said.

He called on Nigerians to confirm the authenticity of information obtained online before accepting or disseminating such reports

“I think it is important that when information is shared online, that information must be verified,” he said.

Adekunle noted that the false reports had not deterred customers and merchants from using OPay.

“If you look at the volume of transactions and the way Nigerians responded, it shows the resilience that OPay has as a platform,” he said.

He said activity on the platform remained steady, with customers transacting and merchants receiving payments as usual.

Adekunle said the continued patronage demonstrated the confidence Nigerians had in OPay in spite of the false information.

He said the company remained committed to making financial services more inclusive through technology.

Adekunle said OPay would pursue every legal avenue to hold those responsible accountable.

He said the continued availability, speed and security of OPay’s services would strengthen public confidence in the company.

Also speaking, Akinfolabi Rokosu, Chief Legal Counsel at OPay, said the company was not ruling out legal action over the false information.

Rokosu said the matter was currently under investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Police.

“As the matter is currently under investigation by the DSS and Police, we wait for the outcome and then take the necessary action,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to disregard unverified reports and rely on credible sources for information concerning the company’s operations.
