The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Area Command, Idiroko, has intercepted 6,035 wraps of cannabis sativa valued at ₦2,087,603,186.76 in different locations across Ogun State.

‎The seizure was disclosed on Thursday by the Area Comptroller of the Command, Mr Olukayode Afeni, while the consignments were formally handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Idiroko Special Area Command, for further investigation.

‎Afeni said the handover was carried out in line with the Service’s standard operating procedures and the relevant legal framework governing seized illicit drugs.

‎He raised concern over the circulation of potent cannabis variants, particularly Ghana Loud, warning that their movement through the borders could pose serious risks to young people, schools and communities.

According to Afeni, Ghana Loud, described as a strong strain of cannabis, has been linked to acute psychosis, severe cardiovascular distress, rapid addiction and long-term mental health degradation.

‎“The high profit margin of Ghana Loud is also linked to violent criminal networks, human trafficking, and illegal proliferation of arms across the borders,” he said.

‎‎The Customs chief also warned that the smuggling of cannabis and other dangerous variants, including Ghana Loud and Colorado, to younger demographics could destabilise schools and local communities.

‎Giving an overview of the Command’s anti-drug operations, Afeni disclosed that from January to date, the Ogun I Area Command had handed over 32,412 parcels of hard drugs and 92 sacks of raw cannabis sativa to the NDLEA Idiroko Special Command.

‎‎He described the fight against drug smuggling as a collective responsibility and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to securing Nigeria’s borders and safeguarding the nation’s future.

‎Afeni also warned drug traffickers to abandon the illicit trade, stressing that the Command would continue to intercept prohibited goods and take action against those involved.

‎‎

Responding, the NDLEA Commander, Mr Olaniyi Ekundayo, represented by Adewale Fagbohun, a Director in Narcotics, commended the Customs Service for its efforts.

‎‎Fagbohun said the seizure demonstrated the diligence and resilience of the Customs Service in securing the country’s borders and protecting society.

‎‎He reaffirmed the NDLEA’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Customs and other relevant agencies to disrupt the activities of smugglers involved in the illicit drug trade.
