Osun Election: Davido Appeals To Trump Over Fears Of Violence

Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has appealed to United States President Donald Trump and the international community to closely monitor the forthcoming Osun State governorship election amid concerns over possible violence, intimidation and disruption of the democratic process.

The election is scheduled for August 15, 2026, with Davido urging attention to the safety of voters and the credibility of the electoral process as the state prepares for the poll.

In a direct appeal to Trump, Davido said, “President Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election.”

“There are growing concerns about tension and the possibility of violence, intimidation, or disruption of the democratic process,” he added.

The singer called for international attention to the election, urging relevant authorities to ensure that residents are able to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely and peacefully and that their ballots are respected.

Davido’s intervention has generated reactions, particularly over his decision to seek the attention of a foreign leader over a Nigerian state election.

Defending his appeal after a social media user questioned his description of Trump as his president, Davido explained that he holds dual citizenship.

“He’s my president too; I get dual citizenship… any problem?” he replied.

The exchange followed a post by a critic who shared a photograph of Davido with President Bola Tinubu and questioned why the singer referred to Trump as his president.

The development has further drawn attention to Davido’s personal connection to the Osun election. The singer is the nephew of incumbent Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, who is seeking another term in office, making Davido’s intervention particularly significant in the context of the forthcoming poll.

Davido later indicated that his appeal had received attention from U.S. diplomatic representatives, sharing what he presented as evidence that people connected to the U.S. Government had reached out to him. However, reports available so far do not establish that Trump personally responded to the singer.

The appeal comes against the backdrop of growing concerns over the security and credibility of the August 15 election, with civil society groups and other stakeholders also raising concerns about violence and intimidation ahead of the poll.

With the election days away, Davido’s intervention has added an international dimension to the conversation around the Osun poll, placing renewed focus on election security, protection of voters and the need for a peaceful and credible electoral process.
